Allen Wendell Phillips, 71, passed away peacefully Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at home in Clarkston. He was born May 7, 1954, in Grangeville, to Ray and Marian Phillips.
Allen grew up in Lapwai, graduating with the class of 1972. Alongside his siblings, he often described their childhood as being “feral kids”— riding bikes, building forts, splashing in the creek and finding adventure everywhere. He had a lifetime of stories from those years, especially about sports and the hilarity of school bus rides. His best friend, Scott Wilson, was a constant sidekick, and the two were known for their trench coats, impromptu hitchhiking and dancefloor antics — always chasing fun and laughter.
Allen married Jeanette Ankney Keller on March 19, 1977, and together they raised two daughters, Alaina (Tyler) Simons and Marci (Jeff) Purcell, during 25 years of love, travel and parenting. In 2010, he married his best friend, Betty Pottenger. Betty wasn’t just his partner in life but his favorite fishing buddy. Together they built a warm, happy life with their beloved dog Maddie Grace, who rarely left his side.
Above all, Allen was a devoted father. As a proud “girl dad,” he embraced ponytail days, school events and a household full of pets. He showed up for every game, concert and milestone with his signature hugs, humor and unwavering love. His presence was steady, joyful and grounding. He protected, encouraged and adored his daughters, teaching them what love truly looks like.
Professionally, Allen began as the first fourth-generation insurance agent but found his calling in signs. Allen built a successful career helping businesses stand out. After working at Pioneer Sign in the 1990s, he founded Signcrafters in 2004, which grew into a respected business serving the region. He led with creativity, integrity and deep appreciation for his team — especially Tami Everett and Tony Irby, whose loyalty and friendship he treasured. Allen also served his community through nonprofit boards and as president of the Lewiston Chamber of Commerce.
Allen loved the outdoors — fishing, boating, hunting in his younger years — and especially his time spent at the cabin in Winchester. He and Betty enjoyed discovering local lunch spots and supporting small businesses. His bond with his siblings, especially his sisters, was full of playful teasing and laughter. He’d often sing, “I’ve Got All My Sisters with Me,” or jokingly warn, “I’m gonna snuff your lights out!” — always with a grin.
His greatest joy was being a grandfather. Allen cheered the loudest at every event, taught the kids how to fish (but never made them bait the hook) and spent countless happy hours wrestling in the living room and making memories at the cabin. He was endlessly proud of each grandchild: Tristan and Natalie Simons, Tanner Lloyd, Conner and Collin Purcell and Griffin, Nash, Lennox and Parker Pottenger.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Douglas, and is survived by his wife Betty; daughters Alaina and Marci; stepson Andy (Abby) Pottenger; siblings Rolly (Renee), Cathy (Curt), Carolyn (Clay), Chrissy (Carlos) and Mary Ann; and many beloved grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
Allen will be remembered for his quick wit, generous heart and deep love for his people. Whether telling a story, flipping salmon on the grill or simply being present, Allen brought warmth, laughter and light into every room.
